Metal hardness testers are used to control the hardness of the part, without destroying its structure.

Hardness measurement methods

  • The Brinell (HB) method is used to measure hardness by means of indentation of the indenter in the form of a ball. The symbol HB is used to indicate Brinell hardness.
  • The Rockwell method (HR) is used to measure hardness by means of indentation of the indenter in the form of a cone. There are 11 Rockwell hardness scales (A; B; C; D; E; F; G; H; K; N; T) based on the combination "indenter (tip) — load". To denote the hardness determined by the Rockwell method, the symbol HR (English Hardness Rockwell – Rockwell Hardness) is used, to which a letter is added indicating the scale on which the tests were carried out: HRA, HRB, HRC, etc.
  • The Vickers (HV) method was proposed in 1921 by British engineers Robert L. Smith and Georg E. Sandland, who worked at Vickers Ltd. To measure the hardness, the indenter indentation method in the form of a pyramid is used. To denote the hardness determined by the Vickers method, the symbol HV (English Hardness Vickers – Vickers hardness) is used.
  • The Shore method (HS) is used to measure hardness by means of the rebound of the striker (the height of the rebound is measured), the main scales C and D, which are added to the measurement method, e.g. HSD (English Hardness Shore D – Shore hardness type D). In fact, it has no practical application and is found only in scientific literature.
  • The Lieb method (HL) is used to denote the hardness determined by the Lieb method, the symbol HL (English Hardness Leeb – Lieb hardness) is used. There are shock sensors of various types (e.g. C, D, DC, DL, E, G, S), so it is always necessary to indicate the type of shock sensor used in the measurement, e.g. HLD or HLG.
